Examination Syllabi

SAGC (previously PLATO) examinations are set twice a year. (2nd week in May and November)

There are many Acts and Rules governing the practice of Surveying.
All the Acts and Rules required for the examinations (open book and closed book) can be downloaded from this website.

exams   To all examination candidates

Kindly take note that Paper A which was set on the SAGC Act (Act 19 of 2013) and the Plato Rules has changed.    Paper A will forthwith be set on the following Acts :

PLEASE NOTE      This change will come into immediate effect.
                                   from May 2018 examination, Paper A will be set on the three Acts as mentioned above.

  Candidates will write the following law exams:
  Geomatics Professional Land Surveyors A B C
  Geomatics Professional Engineering Surveyors A D If not previously written
  Geomatics Technologists : Engineering Surveyors A D  
  Geomatics Technicians and GISc Technicians A    
  Geomatics Professional Mine Surveyors, Mine Surveyors A E  
  Geomatics Professional GISc, GISc Technologists A F If not previously written
         

  The various exams consist of the following parts:
  Exam A 2½ hours open book
    SAGC Act, SAGC Code of Conduct, Draft Regulations
Written by candidates for professional land surveyors and technicians. Also written by applicants for registration as surveyor and professional engineering surveyor who have not previously written this exam.
       Monday - Day 1
  Exam B 3 hours open book
    Land Survey Act (and Regulations) and Deeds Registries Act (and Regulations)
Written by candidates for registration as professional land surveyors..
       Tuesday - Day 2
  Exam C 3 hours closed book
    Other acts and court cases as marked for PLS.     (See Law Exam Syllabus)
In most cases only an overview of the act is required.
Written by candidates for registration as professional land surveyors.
       Wednesday - Day 3
  Exam D 3 hours closed book
    Other acts as marked for Sur.      (See Law Exam Syllabus)
In most cases only an overview of the act is required.
Written by candidates for registration as surveyors. Also written by applicants for registration as professional engineering surveyor who have not previously written this exam..
       Monday - Day 1
  Exam E 3 hours closed book
    5 Mining related acts
Written by candidates for registration as Mine surveyors and Prof. Mine surveyors. .
       Monday - Day 1
  Exam F 3 hours closed book
    Other acts as marked for GISc
